An Apple A Day
The health of communities is related to the nutritional content of the food eaten. Students will examine the role of food and its nutritional components in the body, explore the nutritional needs of individuals and groups, explain the effects of poor nutrition and investigate means of improving the nutritional status of individuals and groups. Students will select, plan and prepare safe and nutritious foods to reflect national food guides.
Food technology provides students with an opportunity to enjoy fellowship in a less structured environment. The enjoyment of food preparation is a skill for life. We are blessed to live in culture where we have access and availability to a vast variety of ingredients. This is a cause for thankfulness to God. Through the fusion of cultures in Australia, we are exposed to an enjoyable way of learning about Australians through food and preparation techniques.
The aim of this unit is to actively engage students in learning about the science of food in a variety of settings, enabling them to evaluate the relationships between food, technology, nutritional status and the quality of life. Students will develop confidence and proficiency in their practical interactions with and decisions regarding food.
From a biblical perspective, God’s people are constantly gathered in fellowship around food. There are a number of instructions to do with the generous sharing of food, hospitality and attitudes toward food and eating. Given that it was not necessary for God to create the array of ingredients that He did, it would seem that food preparation and presentation is a gift and a way for us to express our God given creativity.
Whatever we do should bring glory to God (1 Corinthians 10:31; Peter 4:10-11), God created us in his image and so we should learn to look after our bodies in worship, praise and thankfulness to Christ.
